What is “Card News”? A Uniquely Korean News Format

As the news industry and media continues to evolve, there are more and more ways in which news companies are improving the delivery of content to consumers. The difficulties facing news companies are well known in this era of declining revenues and increasing preference for digital media as a free source of news. News companies are looking for ways to adapt, to satisfy their consumers and to stay profitable. My students and I often discuss these issues in my journalism and advertising courses. The last few years have seen news companies around the world experiment with various strategies and styles, from pay walls to citizen journalism. To my surprise, I discovered that one of these new formats was unknowingly right in front of me, being used in the Korean media for some time: a creative new way of presenting news information.

Despite believing I was completely up-to-date on developments in the news industry, it was actually my students who taught me something new this past semester. One day during a break in class, I overheard my students talking in Korean about something called “카드 뉴스”. This is a type of a Konglish (Korean-English) phrase that can be translated as “card news” in English. I thought to myself, “What is card news?” as I had never heard of it before. So I asked my students. They explained it to me in English and showed me an example on a smartphone. Basically, card news is the text and images of a news story that is presented as a slide show. It turns out I had seen card news before (I often see my students sharing and commenting on card news stories on Facebook), I just didn't know what it was called.

After some research, I found card news on most Korean news websites, such as Yonhap News, SBS News, ENS News, JTBC News, Korean Joongang Daily, OhMyNews, and of course, on Civic News. The first examples of card news seem to have popped up on Korean news websites in 2014 and have expanded since then. Searching for “card news” on Google yields no relevant results from North American websites. The only examples and information I could find were from Korean websites after searching for “카드 뉴스”. Card news is popular on social networking services (SNS) but again, only in the Korean language. Despite my searches, I couldn't find any examples of card news from my favourite English news websites, like BBC News, CBC News, The Guardian and CNN. Indeed, one of my colleagues confirmed this by describing card news as “Korean style news”.

The closest thing to card news in Canadian or American media is ‘interactive news’. Interactive news is also a digital news format that has been gaining popularity in recent years. For example, in the CBC News “Interactives” section of their website (https://goo.gl/SxcPpc), news stories are presented in a scrollable format with photos, text, infographics, and videos. These interactive stories are quite rare because of the reporting time and resources that they require, but they offer unparalleled in-depth coverage. The interactive style is usually reserved for complex feature stories that are thousands of words long. Card news is much different because the stories are short and brief, with 10-12 slides of concise text and summaries. The brevity, special slide format, and reading ease of card news make this style uniquely Korean.

I believe card news is an example of media companies listening to their consumers’ wants and needs. It is the type of change in news style that needs to happen as communication habits and technologies evolve. While the role of news companies is not to merely give consumers what they want, it is their responsibility to present news in a convenient and easily understandable format. For the next generation of news consumers, who have their own news preferences, card news offers a way to appeal to them. As technology advances and consumers further rely on their smartphones and tablets for information, news companies must adapt content to their audience accordingly. Swiping, tapping, and scrolling through card news, with the touch of a finger, are intuitive ways for consumers to interact with news digitally.

Personally, I can easily relate to card news and I feel familiar with the format, as it resembles the Power Point Presentation lectures I give to students every week. My lecture slides provide the most important information briefly and clearly. However, much of the context about topics from class is not included in the slides, as there simply isn’t enough space. Instead, I take the time to carefully explain the background information to students, filling in the blanks for them so they can see the full picture. One disadvantage with card news is that it lacks this context and in-depth information because of the format. Without a journalist or reporter to help explain the circumstances or situation (like in a news video), it is up to the consumer to seek out this important information on their own.

Critics of card news will be quick to point out that card news is too short and doesn’t give enough information. While short, summarized news is not ideal, the format is efficient in raising awareness and informing the most number of people. It is no secret that many younger news consumers seek out information in two ways: 1) without paying 2) digitally. Card news fulfills those needs with its style. Because card news doesn’t look like traditional news, it can also grab the attention of people who are otherwise uninterested in news. After all, receiving news information from card news is better than consumers neglecting news altogether. Time is another consideration since many news consumers ignore longer stories in print and video in favour of news that provides instant gratification with minimum effort. Card news does this by giving the most important information to consumers whom have little time to spare and often read news while on the go.

I’m certainly not championing summarized news instead of longform news. There will always be a need for in-depth news coverage and consumers interested in such news stories will seek them out. Some of the most important news events need space and time in order for consumers to fully understand the issue. But card news does serve its audience well and is an exciting development in the news industry. Looking to the future, perhaps card news could even be adapted to accommodate longform feature stories. Since card news is still in its infancy, there is much room for adjustments and improvements to make it even more effective at conveying information. One idea, for example, is that short video clips could be embedded in the card news slides along with text and photos to create a complete multimedia experience.

In an industry that is ever changing, is card news simply a trend? Will the format spread to other countries and languages? It is too soon to say for certain. However, if card news continues to gain popularity, other problems with this news style will need to be addressed. Monetizing card news may prove to be difficult and news companies will start asking how they can turn a profit as more resources are devoted to creating card news. The ease of sharing card news could also hurt the format in the long term, as authorial attribution, quality control, and fact verification may be difficult to maintain. Despite the challenges ahead, one thing is for certain: card news is proving to be an innovative way to attract young news consumers and adjust content delivery to tech savvy audiences. In order to guarantee the future success and evolution of the news industry, similar advancements must be made to benefit both news consumers and content creators.
